The religious museum is situated in the rooms of the old prelacy of the Cistercian monastery in Sticna. The idea of establishing a museum in Sticna was born long ago, but its realisation began as late as 1980, when a primary and secondary school situated in a part of the monastery buildings left. In the first decade of its existence the museum collected and exhibited the items on a non-professional basis. With the support of the monastery and under the supervision of the Office for the Protection of Historical Monuments, as well as with the help of different donators from Slovenia and abroad the museum managed to set up the exhibition rooms. In 1991 the Society of Friends of the Slovene Religious Museum was founded, which with the support of the Ministry for Culture employed the first curator. Through the years the museum employed further employees, all working on a very high professional level. The museum protects, researches, preserves, restores and records the sacral heritage on the territory of Slovenia and at the same time educates and informs the people about the history and tradition of religious devotion in Slovenia.
