LONDON BUSINESS SCHOOL: THE SLOAN MASTERS

The Sloan Masters

is an intensive international challenge which prepares successful
managers and professionals for the most senior posts in business and
industry or enables them to start their own successful new ventures.

The Sloan Masters programme is:

- ideal for repositioning successful mid-career managers and
professionals for the next phase of their business life
- one of the three prestigious Sloan Programmes in the world
- the only Sloan Programme available to self-sponsored as well as
  sponsored students

Origin

The Sloan Masters began at the Massachusetts Institute of
Technology (MIT) in 1931. It was the idea of Alfred P. Sloan Jnr,
Chairman of General Motors, who wanted to provide a broad development
programme for successful managers.

In 1966, Professor Charles Handy, himself an MIT Sloan Fellow, was
appointed to establish the Sloan Programme at London Business School.
Today the programme has three locations, all in world-class business
schools: MIT, Stanford and London Business School.  All the
programmes share the same heritage, although they operate
quite independently.

Objective

The London Business Sloan Masters is intended to:

- develop business skills, knowledge and confidence
- develop strategic and functional capabilities
- enhance effectiveness and internationalism of senior managers
- prepare for leadership and strategic management roles

It greatly enhances the effectiveness of people who are responsible
for managing people, departments and organisations, as well as
entrepreneurs.

We build a uniquely global perspective on all aspects of management
and business, through collaborative learning in an international peer
group whose diversity and maturity are a key element in the
philosophy of the Sloan Masters at London Business School.

ECOLE DES HAUTES ETUDES EN SCIENCES SOCIALES

The Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) is an important
and well known institute of higher education, which is directly associated
with the Ministry of Education, Research and Technology. Its mission is to
undertake research and instruction in the social sciences. Also included in
its mission is the investigation of the relationship between the social
sciences and the natural and life sciences.

To fulfill its mission as an institute of higher education, the EHESS
confers first, its own degree, the EHESS diploma. Secondly, doctoral
instruction follows national legislation, which prescribes that students
complete the "Diplôme d'Etudes Approfondies" (DEA) during their first year.
This degree, which is roughly equivalent to a Masters degree, is followed
by the doctoral dissertation. The EHESS also awards the title of "Director
of Research", an academic title initiated by the law of 26 January 1984.

The EHESS coordinates and administers the scientific research and academic
instruction of all of its associated social science research groups and
centers. These activities are carried out at centers located principally in
Paris, but also in Marseilles, Toulouse and Lyons.

5.
SCHOOL OF INTERNATIONAL AND PUBLIC AFFAIRS

Columbia University's School of International Affairs was founded in 1946,
in the aftermath of World War II. It originated in dynamic regional
institutes that, with an interdisciplinary vision bold for its day, drew on
Columbia's renowned faculties in history, economics, political science,
linguistics, and other traditional fields. The mission of the School was to
foster understanding of regions of vital interest and to prepare diplomats,
officials, and other professionals to meet the complexities of the postwar
world.

By 1950, three regional institutes were in operation--the Russian (now
Harriman) Institute, the first of its kind in the United States; the East
Asian Institute, and the European Institute (now the Institute on Western
Europe). During the 1950s and 1960s, under the successive leadership of
Schuyler C. Wallace and Andrew W. Cordier, the School expanded in scope and
depth: SIA developed a national and international profile as a leading
center for educational and research programs in area studies, security, and
international relations. By 1967, the School was home to eight regional
institutes, covering nearly every part of the globe. Faculty of these
institutes provided--and continue to provide--expertise to government on
all levels, the public, the media, and organizations and agencies worldwide.

Regional Institutes and Centers:
http://www.columbia.edu/cu/sipa/viewbook/centers.html

The Master of International Affairs (MIA) degree program broadened during
the 1970s. New concentrations emphasized analytic and quantitative
techniques and other concrete skills essential to careers in international
affairs. These functional concentrations, now seven in all, encouraged the
School's evolution in response to emerging areas of need and professional
opportunity--from international finance to media, from human rights to
environmental policy.

In 1977, the School added a second degree, the Master of Public
Administration, to meet a growing demand for skilled professionals at home
as well as abroad. The MPA program stresses analytic and management skills
while encouraging students' commitment to public service and understanding
of the processes influencing government. In 1981, the program was renamed
the Graduate Program in Public Policy and Administration and the School
renamed the School of International and Public Affairs.

In addition to analytic concentrations, the MPA program offers a variety of
policy concentrations, from education to health to urban affairs. Those
completing the program bring vision and know-how to government on all
levels, to not-for-profits and nongovernmental organizations, and to the
private sector as well.

MPA Degree Program:
http://www.columbia.edu/cu/sipa/viewbook/mpaprogram.html

Today, SIPA is reconfiguring for leadership in the post-Cold War era,
revising its programs to mirror a globalized world in which the boundaries
between international and public affairs, like the boundaries among
nations, have grown less distinct.

Over the past decade our faculty has expanded with the addition of
first-rate SIPA-based faculty, among them practitioner-scholars who bring
their years of professional experience into the classroom. We continue to
strengthen links to Columbia's professional schools and academic
departments and to find new ways for students and faculty to engage the
enormous resources and challenges of the nation's largest and most
international city. As it has for half a century, the School is evolving to
provide committed students with the skills and perspectives they will need
to provide responsible leadership.

SAINT MARY'S UNIVERSITY: MASTER'S DEGREES

Atlantic Canada Studies

Admission to the Masters of Arts in Atlantic Canada Studies is made through
an honors degree in the subject, or an equivalent degree. In this program,
you will benefit from the strong concentration of research expertise at the
Gorsebrook Research Institute which sponsors research on issues related to
Atlantic Canada. As well, the Donald Higgins Memorial Scholarship is
available each year for a master's student in this subject.

Astronomy

This two-year program is the only one of its kind offered in Atlantic
Canada. It involves a combination of course work and seminars, along with
the preparation/defense of a research thesis. With faculty, you conduct
research on topics of major interest in astronomy and astrophysics, using
both theoretical and observational techniques. Most Saint Mary's graduate
students go on to advanced programs (PhD).

Business Administration (MBA)

Saint Mary's MBA is the program of choice for managers looking to acquire
the skills to take them to the top. In addition to the traditional
full-time option, you may choose to pursue the program on a part-time
basis, or opt for the Executive MBA.

History

This Masters program offers comprehensive training in the history of North
America, as well as areas of Asia and modern Europe. After attaining an
honors standing, you will make a detailed study of selected historical
fields and prepare a thesis. A knowledge of a language other than English
is essential.

International Development Studies

Saint Mary's offers a multi-disciplinary program leading to a Master's
degree in this subject. The program is based on a core of policy-oriented
courses dealing with the problems experienced by developing countries in
the Caribbean, Latin America, Asia, and Africa. The class attracts students
from the developing countries, whose first-hand experience is an important
component of the program.

A graduate diploma in International Development Studies is also available.
It has the same criteria as the Master's degree, but with no thesis
requirement.

Philosophy

This program is for those with a first degree in Philosophy who are
interested in pursuing original research in this subject. The program
involves in-depth exploration of a single philosophical question;
subsequent writing and presenting/defending the results of this work. This
degree is suitable for those planning a career in philosophy, and for those
preparing for careers that call for rigorous and original thought.

Applied Psychology

A Master of Science degree is offered in two fields of applied psychology:
clinical, and industrial/organizational (I/O). The clinical program will
prepare you to provide assessment and intervention in psychological
problems; the I/O program will prepare you to examine and understand the
behaviors of individuals and groups in organized environments.

Women's Studies

The Master of Arts in Women's Studies emphasizes the interdisciplinary
basis of Women's Studies, focusing on such research areas as feminist
theory and methodology; women and work; gender and development; women and
social change. This program is offered jointly by Saint Mary's, Mount Saint
Vincent and Dalhousie universities, drawing on the resources and expertise
of all three institutions.

Entrance Requirements

Application for admission is made to the Director of Admissions. Admission
requirements include an official transcript of academic record and letters
of recommendation from at least two persons in a position to judge an
applicant's capacity for graduate study. All application material must be
received by the Admissions office by May 31 of the academic year prior to
the one for which admission is sought. The exception to this policy is the
MBA program where admission is done on a continuous basis; students may
begin their studies in September, January, May or July.

Successful applicants will be notified by the Director of Admissions.

8.
UNIVERSITY OF SURREY, SCHOOL OF PERFORMING ARTS

The School's plans are designed to position its four departments, of Dance,
Music, Sound Recording, and Theatre and Performance Studies, securely
within the internationally recognised centre of research and postgraduate
education known as the School of Performing Arts. This ambition is
justified on the grounds of its innovative and distinctive undergraduate
and postgraduate programmes, augmented by an interdisciplinary profile at
the postgraduate level incorporating Theatre and Performance Studies. There
is a shared emphasis on the use of, and research into, technology in new
media as well as live performance creation and analysis.

Department of Theatre and Performance Studies: Study Opportunities

MA in Physical Theatre

The MA Physical Theatre capitalises upon the strengths of two leading
departments in dance and drama in the United Kingdom:- the University of
Surrey and Royal Holloway, University of London. Taught and validated
jointly by both institutions, this is an innovative programme, commencing
in October 1997, which presents a rare opportunity to explore concepts of
Physical Theatre within a Masters degree.

The programme aims to integrate theory and practice at the cutting edge of
debate as to what constitutes Physical Theatre. Students follow four main
components:

The Body as a Medium of Expression
either Choreographing Movement or Director's Course with Exploring Content
and Narrative in Choreography
Dance Analysis and Criticism: an introduction to theory and practice to be
followed by Body Praxis in Physical Theatre
Dissertation Project
The degree is designed to enhance career opportunities in dance, theatre,
education and research.

Potential students are invited for interview and practical audition.
Videotapes of recent work should be submitted prior to interview and, in
certain instances, written work will be requested.

This is an exciting new venture offered by two departments which already
have considerable experience and expertise in running graduate programmes.
Facilities at both institutions are available to students and the programme
offers ample opportunity to interrogate and embody issues of definition and
discrimination within studio and seminar environments.

MPhil and PhD

The first M.Phil./Ph.D. students were registered with the Department in
1998. Subjects studied include: Emotion in Actor Training, Contemporary
Women's Theatre, Public Spaces and the Theatricality of Culture, The Body
in the Age of the Visceral, Multimedia Performance and the Staging of
Gender, and Computer Games as Theatrical Worlds.

Required Qualifications

Applications are invited from well qualified candidates with a BA Honours
degree in a relevant field and ideally also with an MA or similar
qualification/level of experience in theatre practice. Applicants should
have strong writing skills and verbal communication skills, and a clearly
focused research proposal. Applicants will be required to submit a sample
of their writing and critical thinking in the form of an essay of at least
8-10,000 words. Physical Theatre and MFA applicants are required to
audition.

Applications in the following fields are particularly welcomed: the theory
and practice of performance, theories of acting and directing, the theory
and practice of Non-Western performance, gender and performance (practice
and theory), multimedia performance (practice and theory).

The University of Surrey's School of Performing Arts is uniquely placed as
a provider of high quality teaching and research facilities, and has a
policy of accepting practical work (in live, scripted, composed, annotated,
video-recorded or otherwise documented form) as part of the Ph.D.
submission.

Duration

Full time Ph.D.: normally 3 years (min. 2 years, max. 5 years)
Part-time Ph.D.: normally 5 years (min. 4 years, max. 6 years)
